As KTQ-Shareholders, the German Medical Association (Bundesärztekammer), Central Associations of the Statutory Health Insurance Companies (Spitzenverbände der gesetzlichen Krankenkassen (GKV)), German Hospital Association (Deutsche Krankenhausgesellschaft e.V. (DKG)), German Nursing Federation (Deutscher Pflegerat e.V. (DPR)), as well as the Hartmannbund (Association of Physicians in Germany (HB)), provide the facilities in the health sector with a practice-related orientation for their quality management by means of the KTQ-Procedure.

The procedure encourages employees of the different professions to describe their communication and cooperation in the categories of the KTQ-Model across hierarchy levels and in a transparent way. This description forms the basis of the self-assessment and is therefore the centre of the procedure, which assists the hospitals with the implementation and continuous improvement of their internal quality management.

The KTQ-Model including its six categories or subjects, such as Patient orientation,

Employee orientation, Safety, Information and communication, Leadership and Quality management is the form, in which all processes in the facilities of the health sector can be described. The categories are always connected to the interest of the patient. They serve the purpose of improving all processes in such a way that the patient is offered the best possible medical care. The permanent application of the PLAN-DO-CHECK-ACT cycle as a control method for continuous improvement therefore serves the interest of the patients and all parties involved in the process.

The self-assessment is reviewed by the KTQ®-Visitoren as practitioners as an external assessment during the visitation. This is followed by the mandatory publishing of the KTQ-Quality report, by means of which the required external transparency is achieved, in a comprehensible language for the patients and the public.
